On 12th December, Ed, the newest member of the team, visited St George's College in Weybridge to present to the 5th form Geography students who have been learning all about flooding and flood risk management strategies in class. Ed helped contextualise this knowledge by providing an introduction to local flood risk and delving into the pros and cons of two important flood risk management strategies in Surrey: The River Thames Scheme and Temporary Demountable Defences.

The students showed great interest, particularly in exploring the huge scale of the River Thames Scheme and how the new flood channels will affect them, and there is already talk of returning next year to present to the whole GCSE Geography contingent.

Engagement with the local community on issues such as flood risk is a critical part of our roles by helping to improve community resilience. With the increasing impacts of climate change, the importance of talking to the younger generations on issues such as flooding and how we can manage it grows ever pertinent.
