Aim of Course
This course has been designed to help Emergency Responders to better understand the weather, the role of the Met Office and what services they provide. Completion of the course will lead to an increased knowledge and understanding which can be applied when responding to severe weather or a weather-related incident.
The full course will consist of a combination of theoretical and practical sessions which together make up a full day’s course.

Sessions Include

  • Basic Meteorology – gives an overview of the meteorological features that affect the UK weather including global circulations, the jet stream, air masses and frontal systems.
  • NSWWS – looks at the National Severe Weather Warning Service, how the Met Office decides to issue them and how you can use them to help decision making.
  • UK Weather – gain an understanding of the different types of weather that affects the UK, help you to understand the potential impacts and learn from past events.
  • Met Office Products & Services – gain an understanding of the products and services provided by the Met Office to help you ahead of and during an incident.
  • Practical Sessions – using gained knowledge to understand how forecast weather leads to warnings and a potential response.

Target Audience
All Local Resilience Forum Emergency Responders.

This training is delivered by SLRF and open to its members. Each Surrey Borough contributes to Surrey's Local Resilience Forum (SLRF). Part of this contribution is delivered through supporting training for Surrey responders. In most cases there is no charge per attendee for training, although some courses, such as those requiring external trainers or venues, there can be an additional cost per delegate.
